Portrait Painting – Geisha

Geisha painting - soft airbrushingHere’s my latest soft-airbrushing painting. Referenced from a subscriber (Kay Dawkins) to my Facebook page. I love the look on the photo. The make-up and hair style had a Geisha feel to it, so that’s what I called it.

You can click on the image for the actual resolution that it was painted at. This was painted in Photoshop with the Wacom Cintiq 22HD.

Painting Step by Step

Here is a series of snapshots from my painting video. It’ll show you the basic steps of the soft airbrushing technique for this Geisha painting. I love this simple painting technique because it’s quick to paint, and the portrait seems to get lifted from the paper as it progress.

Steps 1 and 2

Start with a grey background in Photoshop (or any other painting software) and set your brush and flow opacity to 25%. The first step is to lay down the darks. Don’t go too dark, just enough for you to see the form. Then go in with the whites and pull some of the major shape and highlights out. Again, not too light.

Steps 3 and 4

Now we’ll switch back to black and add in more details. Usually, I start in the eye as those are generally the darkest areas. Repeat with white. These steps are similar to the previous steps, we’re just pushing the lights and darks to another notch and using smaller brushes to add details.

Steps 5 and 6

At these later stages, you’ll start to see the forms come alive. It is also here that I’ll start to see where I’ve make mistakes on the values. Most of the correcting happens here. Keep repeating the process until you have what you like. When you want to stop and call it done is your choice. That’s really more of an expression of your own. I tend to like to leave some surrounding areas undone in order to add more focus to the crucial areas in the face.

Just remember, the whole painting process from beginning to the end is similar to seeing an out of focus image through the camera lens and you slowly turning the dial to put the image into sharp focus. Hope this helps.

Wacom’s Multi-Touch Mobile Tablet in Summer 2013

A Mobile Wacom Cintiq?

Looks like Wacom is finally going to get a mobile tablet out next summer. I’m sure it’ll be cool, but the question is how much are you willing to pay for a mobile Cintiq? With their new Cintiq 13HD priced at $999, I’m guessing a Wacom mobile tablet would probably be priced between $1000 to $1500. If that’s the case, it’ll be too expensive of a toy for me. It seems hard to do serious work on a mobile device. Most intensive creative works are done with other tools and references at home or in the office with headphones blasting. So I’m very curious what their selling points would be. We’ll just have to wait and see, it’s all speculation at this point.

Recently I’ve been looking into the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 for sketching while on the go. I’ll probably get that soon. It seems like a good sketch pad.

Wacom’c announcement:

“We’ve heard you shouting out loud for a Wacom mobile tablet for creative uses. Well… we’re listening. We’ve read your email and spoken to many about an on-the-go dream device. It will come. This summer. We’re working 24/7 on it. And yes, it has a real pressure-sensitive professional pen, smooth multi-touch, an HD display, and other valuable features that you haven’t seen in other tablets.”

Lady Dragon Resin Kits Update

Lady Dragon Statue

sexy lady dragon statue cast with dragonOne step closer to getting my Lady Dragon resin kits done! Here is the latest progress on the casting of my statue. All we need are the molds for the dress and it’s pretty much there. Once all the molds are made, resin kits will be made available for sale. I’m thinking of an edition of 100. Not sure yet, I’ll have to see what kind of demand I get from this. I know many of you have expressed interest in this and subscribers will get a first shot at it. Okay, I might be jumping ahead now, but I’m just so excited about this! Those who have followed my progress on creating this statue knows how difficult of a process it has been. But heck, why do anything that is easy! I always believe that anything easy is not worth doing. Anyhow, I’ll document the process of creating a statue from start to finish for anyone who is interested in doing the same. More on that later.

I have this image in my mind that I can’t shake. The guys at Yamato Toys are telling me that bust are not popular, I have to agree, but then I’m not doing this to have sales, I’m doing this because it’s part of my dream!

Hope to have more good news for you soon!
